Description
This flower is an annual and will grow best in full son. The large double blooms produce excellent seed pods on three foot tall stems, perfect for dried arrangements. This is the source of opium, morphine and codeine. Seeds are used in breads, cakes and Middle Easter cooking. Opium is an extract of the exudate derived from seed pods of the opium poppy, Papaver somniferum. The poppy plant was cultivated in the ancient civilizations of Persia, Egypt and Mesopotamia. Archaeological evidence and fossilized poppy seeds suggest that Neanderthal man may have used the opium poppy over thirty-thousand years ago. Less controversially, the first known written reference to the poppy appears in a Sumerian text dated around 4,000 BC. The flower was known as hul gil, plant of joy. Papaver somniferum is the only species of Papaver used to produce opium. It is believed to have evolved through centuries of breeding and cultivation from a Mediterranean-growing wild strain, Papaver setigerum. Papaver somniferum seeds are legal everywhere in the United States. All Papaver somniferum poppies are considered poisonous. I will include planting and growing instructions as well as a little about this flower with seeds. There is never a reserve on my listings.
