~ The Guardian Familiar ~

The path of Witchcraft leads one into the realm of magic.  Working magic attracts spirits from the Otherworld.  Some of these spirits can attach themselves to your home and ritual area, and may chose not to leave.  Others may return at a time of their own choosing.  Generally speaking this is not a desirable situation and you will want to be alert to any such comings and goings.  On occasion you may also find that another Witch is sending something your way that you do not want around you.  Every religion has those who adhere to the ethics and spirituality of their path and those who do not.

Among the services provided by the Familiar on behalf of the Witch, the Familiar acts as a "sound of warning" and as a guardian.  The sharp physical sense of hearing credited to many animals is but a reflection of their attunement to other realms.  The Familiar aids the Witch by using its heightened  senses to extend the awareness of the Witch.  Anyone with a cat as a pet has frequently observed it seemingly chasing invisible things around the room and up the walls.  From an occult perspective the cat is encountering entities from the spirit world or astral realm.

Some Witches work with their pets as Familiars, and in this sense such animals can be regarded as household guardians.  To help empower the physical guardian you can use a permanent marker pen and draw the amulet design for the Familiar on the inside of the pet's collar.  A small crystal should then be suspended on the collar to hold a magical charge.  Techniques for charging and empowering can be found in part two of this chapter.

Many Witches work with astral or spirit Familiars as guardians and some use what is called the artificial Familiar.  Such entities require a physical form in order to remain within the material dimension.  This can be likened to having a fish in your home, which requires an environment to house it in.  In the case of a fish this would be a bowl of water or a filled aquarium.  For the Familiar you can use a statue or figurine.  If you wish to use a painting or drawing, consult the section in this chapter titled Dream Guardian.  **
